How Long Have You Been Treating Spider Veins at GVSL?

I started treating spider veins at Geelong Veins Skin & Laser in 2011, working alongside Dr. Garth Dicker, who founded the clinic in 1991. Through over 13 years of dedicated practice, I’ve developed a refined skill in leg vein treatments.

Why Did You Develop an Interest in Spider Vein Treatment?

In 2011, I was looking for a change from general practice. A nurse suggested Dr. Garth’s clinic, so I observed his work. Watching sclerotherapy in action, I immediately knew this was what I wanted to do. Seeing surface veins disappear during treatment is incredibly satisfying.

Since then, my work has expanded to include a wide range of vein treatments, as well as skin, laser, and cosmetic procedures.

What Are the Biggest Benefits for Patients?

When I first started treating vein conditions, I thought I was just removing veins. Over time, I realised how much vein disease affects my patients’ lives.

It’s incredibly rewarding to hear clients tell me they can now wear a knee-length dress to a wedding, swim for the first time in years, play with their grandkids, or stand at events without pain or swelling.

Knowing my work has improved their confidence and mental well-being is deeply fulfilling. I’ve helped them stop worrying about their leg veins. I’m proud of the positive impact we have, and thrilled to see them embrace a new lease on life.

What is Better – Laser or Injections?

While patients often assume we treat spider veins exclusively with laser due to our name, Geelong Veins Skin & Laser, injection techniques remain the most effective for leg vein treatments.

  • Injection techniques address underlying issues, such as pressure from larger or varicose veins, providing longer-lasting results.
  • Lasers are effective for treating tiny surface veins on the face, chest, or legs, but they’re less effective for larger leg veins.
  • For very large varicose veins with underlying reflux, our specialist uses laser inside the trunk of the vein to effectively close the vein up to the valve.

In summary, injections are the superior choice for treating spider veins on the legs.

Side note: Laser treatment for veins is often more painful than sclerotherapy, despite common misconceptions.

Are Compression Stockings Necessary?

Yes, medical compression stockings are essential after all vein treatments. They help the treatment work more effectively, reduce the number of sessions required, and minimise side effects such as pain, swelling, and bruising.

Does It Hurt?

Direct vision (or surface) sclerotherapy treatments involve lots of small pricks with a very tiny gauge needle. Most patients cope very well with the minor discomfort. Since 2015, we’ve used a less “sting-y” formulation of the medication we inject, further enhancing patient comfort. If you had injections prior to this, they would have been more intensely painful than the solution we use today.

What Has Changed in Spider Vein Treatments Over the Past Decade?

While some aspects of surface sclerotherapy have stood the test of time, remaining unchanged since the clinic opened in 1991, recent advancements include:

  • A less painful medication formulation.
  • The consistent use of compression stockings for better results.
  • The integration of lasers for treating tiny surface veins on the face and chest.
  • Expanded options for varicose veins, all performed as walk-in, non-hospital procedures.
  • A larger team of vein specialists, including a new onsite interventional radiologist.
  • A rebranding from Geelong Cosmetic & Laser Medical Centre and Geelong Leg Vein Centre to Geelong Veins Skin & Laser.

Do Patients Need a Referral?

You don’t need a referral for spider vein treatment. However, a referral is required for assessments of varicose veins with our specialist.
