Leg vein treatments
Walk in, walk out treatment
Remove spider and surface veins from your legs with our spider vein treatment in Geelong. This safe and effective treatment targets unsightly spider and surface veins, offering you minimal discomfort and no downtime. Visit our expert doctors at Geelong Veins Skin & Laser to discover how easy it can be to remove your spider veins.
How the treatment works
The most effective spider vein treatment of the legs is an injection treatment called sclerotherapy. This involves very tiny needles used to inject a medicated solution into the unwanted veins, causing them to collapse and be reabsorbed back into the body. Both legs are treated on the same day. Sometimes laser treatment of veins is also indicated. This will be the case for very fine veins or veins in other areas of the body such as face / chest or back.
Both methods are quick, effective, and require no downtime, ensuring you get back to your daily routine immediately.
Who it’s for
This treatment is for patients of any age with visible spider or surface veins seeking a non-surgical solution to improve the appearance of their legs and prevent symptoms or complications of vein disease.
Preparation
Your first appointment at GVSL will involve a comprehensive assessment of your leg veins and general health.
On the day of leg spider vein treatment you need to:
- Wear comfortable loose clothing
- Expect to attend the clinic for 30-60 minutes then go for a 30 minute walk immediately afterward
- Don’t apply moisturiser to your legs
- Bring your compression stockings if you have already been fitted for them
Aftercare
- Medical compression stockings need to be worn for 3-7 days following spider vein treatment
- Patients are advised to walk for 30 minutes daily
- Hot / sweaty exercise, saunas, and swimming should be avoided for the time you are wearing the stockings
- Flights >4 hours should not be completed within 4 weeks of treatment
The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with most patients experiencing only minor discomfort, similar to a pinprick or a warm sensation.
Patients may require between 2 to 5 treatments spaced 4 weekly depending on the number and extent of their spider veins. You will be given an estimate at your initial assessment.
Hot / sweaty exercise, saunas, and swimming should be avoided for the time you are wearing the stockings. Flights >4 hours should not be completed within 4 weeks of treatment
Treated veins are unlikely to return, but new veins can develop over time. Maintenance treatments may be recommended to keep your skin clear.
Spider veins are caused by weakened or damaged valves within the veins. This can occur due to factors like genetics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, prolonged periods of standing or sitting, and the natural aging process. These factors contribute to blood pooling in the veins, leading to their visible appearance on the skin.
While it’s not possible to completely prevent spider veins, certain lifestyle changes can reduce your risk or slow their development. Regular exercise, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding extended periods of standing can all help support healthy vein function and prevent the worsening of spider veins.
Spider veins are often considered a cosmetic concern, but they can also indicate underlying venous issues. In some cases, they may lead to discomfort, such as aching or heaviness in the legs, and if left untreated, could potentially result in more serious complications such as DVT, dermatitis and skin ulcers.
The most common treatments for spider veins include sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the veins to close them off, and laser therapy, which uses focused light to cause the veins to collapse and fade. Both treatments are minimally invasive and designed to effectively reduce the appearance of spider veins.
Most patients report minimal discomfort during spider vein treatments. The sensation is often described as small pin pricks. Procedures like sclerotherapy and laser therapy are generally well-tolerated, and topical anesthesia can be used to ensure your comfort during the treatment.
Recovery time after spider vein treatment is typically short. Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately following the procedure. However, it’s important to follow any aftercare instructions provided by your doctor, such as wearing compression stockings and avoiding strenuous activities, to ensure the best possible outcome.
