Medical skin treatments

Skin cancer treatment

At GVSL our expert skin doctors can biopsy or excise any suspicious skin lesions. We use a range of techniques depending on the diagnosis, including skin shave, punch excision and full excisions. We look after you for all the aftercare and recovery with regular follow up skin checks.

How do I book?

If you have already had a diagnosis of skin cancer from another service (GP, mole map, skin doctor) then you can book directly in for an excision appointment.

If you are unsure if your skin spot is cancer, then start with a skin cancer check appointment.

Can you remove all types/sizes of skin cancer?

All types of skin cancer can be treated at Geelong Veins Skin & Laser. Most sizes can be removed, however if the cancer is large or in a delicate area such as around the eyes or mouth then a plastic surgery referral may be needed. We can arrange this. Usually you will need a partial biopsy of the lesion prior to specialist referral to confirm the diagnosis – this can be done at GVSL.

Preparing for your skin excision

Make sure to have something to eat and drink on the day. Expect to be at the clinic for between 30-60 minutes.

Post-treatment guidelines

You will be provided with exact after care advice from your doctor. This will usually include:

  • Covering the wound with a dressing for at least 7 days
  • Keeping the wound clean and dry
  • Avoiding swimming for at least 7 days
  • Avoiding hot sweaty exercise for 24 hours
  • Avoid exercise or housework that will cause significant movement to the treated site for 7 days
Everything you need to know
How quickly can I get an appointment?

If you have a new or suspicious lesion we will endeavor to fit you into an urgent booking within 5-7 days. Please mention this to reception when you call to book. For non urgent / benign skin lesion removals and Skin Cancer Checks there is often a 4-8 week wait.

What is the cost range?

Costs range from $290 to $390 for most excisions

There are medicare rebates

We do not bulkbill

Can you remove more than one cancer at a time?

Your skin cancer doctor will discuss this. We can do multiple biopsies on the one day, but larger excisions may need to be done one at a time.
