Medical skin treatments

The solution for ugly nails

Fungal infection of the nails is a common but difficult to treat issue. It can cause nail discolouration, thickening and sometimes pain. Topical creams and paints are mostly ineffective. Laser treatment through the nail has a good clearance rate.

Fungal Nail Treatment

How does laser nail treatment work?

The medical laser penetrates through the nail firing 20 times per second to heat the area and kill the fungus under the nail. A heat sensation is felt. There are no side effects after the treatment. The new healthy nail grows out at about 1mm per month.

Who is it for?

Patients of any age with discolouration and thickening of the nail caused by fungal infection.

Preparation for appointment

Bring any recent results you already have from your GP (fungal nail clipping tests or recent blood tests). However tests are not essential prior to your appointment. No referral is required.

Post-treatment guidelines

Use antifungal cream to the surrounding skin to prevent re infection for 2 weeks.

Everything you need to know
Is this the same as other laser nail treatments or cold blue light treatment?

We use a 1064nm wavelength laser. This is the most effective laser to treat fungal nail infections and has superior results in studies than other wavelengths or LED light.

Does it hurt?

The laser feels like a warm sensation on the toes that suddenly builds up to an intense heat like touching an oven, this is the endpoint that we stop, so a very brief intense heat is the only discomfort.

Do you only treat the affected nail?

No, we like to treat all toenails (or fingernails if the hands are affected). This is to aid complete eradication.

Can I wear nail polish between sessions?

Yes, but it must be completely removed on the day of treatment prior to your appointment.

Do you treat children with fungal nail infection?

Yes we do, but the child will need to co-operate with wearing safety glasses and tolerate the sensation of the laser.
