Fractional ablative laser for scars and stretchmarks
Laser treatments
Fade scars and stretchmarks
The appearance of scars and stretchmarks can be reduced by medical lasers. At GVSL we often create a treatment plan with different types of lasers, starting with acupulse then utilising vascular or pigment lasers if the scar also has pink or brown colouration.
How does it work?
The Acupulse CO2 laser makes a series of precise, minute core holes ablating into the skin layers of the scar while leaving surrounding skin untouched. These core holes heal and remodel the scar with extra collagen and healthier skin. By leaving a fraction of the skin untreated, this decreases side effects and improves healing time.
What types of scars or stretchmarks can be treated?
- Acne scars
- Scars from skin excisions
- Surgical scars (eg, cesarean, breast surgery)
- Self harm scars
- White or pink stretchmarks
- Hypertrophic or keloid scars (with cortisone injection at the same time)
Preparing for your appointment
No preparation is required. No referral is needed.
Post-treatment guidelines
- You will need to leave a dressing on for 24 hours
- For 1-4 weeks after treatment you should use a silicone scar healing gel
It depends on the size and type of scar and how old it is. Anywhere from 3-10 sessions may be required. Treatments are usually spaced 6 weeks apart.
Acupulse scar laser can feel quite hot and sharp, so we usually apply a numbing cream prior to treatment.
The aim for scar or stretchmark treatment is to soften, flatten, and reduce the size and colour of the scar or stretchmark. We can usually achieve a significant improvement but complete removal is usually not possible.
