Alopecia treatment
Baldness (alopecia) can affect men and women. It can involve certain areas or localised patches of the scalp.
Causes
Hereditary / androgenic alopecia: Also known as male pattern baldness. This affects men more commonly but can also affect women. Hair loss is typically in a broad area on the crown of the scalp +/- at the temples where the hairline can recede.
Stress: A very stressful event like a difficult exam, near death experience or death of a loved one can cause hairloss typically delayed 3-6 months later.
Autoimmune causes: A hair loss condition called alopecia areata occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your hair follicles. This can cause distinct often round areas of complete hair loss.
Medications/medical conditions: Certain medications or medical issues can cause hair changes or hair loss. Examples are chemotherapy, anaemia and thyroid disease.
Symptoms

- Thinning of hair in crown and receding hairline
- Distinct sudden round patches of hair loss

PRP treatment involves taking blood from a vein in your arm, spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma, platelets and regeneration factors that are then re injected back into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.
We recommend a series of 4-6 sessions monthly. A maintenance session every 6-12 months may then be required.
A small amount of cortisone medication is injected into the affected bald patches. This calms down the overactive immune system and allows for hair regrowth.
As early as possible is best to stop the patches growing and achieve hair regrowth.
