Submental fullness or a double chin is a common aesthetic concern. At GVSL we have non surgical treatments to give you back a more youthful, defined jawline, chin and neck.
A double chin is fairly self explanatory – it is the pouch of fat that can accumulate below the chin causing a double chin appearance. It can also be termed “submental fullness”. Often people notice this fullness in side profile photographs.
Treatments
At your initial consultation at Geelong Veins, Skin & Laser we will fully assess the shape, size and contour of your submental fullness, in addition to checking for other causes of swelling in the neck. We can then discuss in detail the options that are most suitable for you as an individual.
The most common solution is an injectable treatment that involves a grid of fat dissolving injections under the chin, permanently destroying the fat cells, which are then dissolved away by the body.
Other options for chin / neck fullness or sagginess include neck lift surgery or liposuction. If you are more suitable for these procedures we can arrange a referral.

If I get rid of the fat under my chin will the skin sag down?
The degree of excess skin will be assessed at your initial appointment. What has been found to occur with this treatment however, is that it tightens and lifts skin as the fats cells are destroyed.
What does the treatment involve?
The actual injections are performed with a fine needle in a grid like pattern under the chin. A series of 10 – 20 injections are done. The injecting will only take around 5-10 minutes, but the process of assessment and consent for this procedure involves a 30-60 minute appointment. You can go ahead on the day or come back for a second appointment if you require longer to consider the treatment. You should not plan to return to work straight afterward or have an important event in the week after treatment due to the risk of localised swelling and redness.
How many treatments are required?
Usually, 2 treatments of 2 vials of the product are required spaced 6 weeks apart. Some people will require a 3rd or 4th treatment of 1-2 vials.
Who performs the treatment?
At Geelong Veins, Skin & Laser the injections for double chin are performed by one of our cosmetic doctors or cosmetic nurses. This product is a prescription only medicine, and as such we are not able to name the brand on our website or promote the brand directly to the public. When choosing which clinic or clinician to see for double chin injections, it is important to ask who the prescribing doctor is and whether they will be available onsite on the day of the procedure or for aftercare if required.
Is the treatment permanent?
Double chin injectable treatment is a permanent solution for double chin fat. Once the fat cells are destroyed in the area they do not grow back. Studies have shown that results are maintained at 4 years post treatment.
Are there any side effects?
Double chin injections have been performed overseas in Europe and the USA and Canada since FDA approval in 2015. Side effects that can occur include pain, swelling, redness, bruising, firmness and tingling. Very rarely have any other side effects occurred, but with any medical procedure there are risks. All possible side effects will be discussed at your initial appointment so you are fully informed prior to the procedure.
