Teenage acne is a common condition that affects many teens. During puberty hormone levels increase and in turn, the body overproduces sebum which provides a breeding ground for bacteria. Teenage acne often is not only seen on the face but also covers the neck, chest and back. Acne not only has physical effects but can also really impact the mental health and well-being of teens.

Effectively treating Acne requires customised treatment plans to suit each individual. Geelong Veins, Skin and Laser Dermal Therapist, Jodie, will highlight some treatment options that are available in the clinic and include some great tips to implement at home.

Firstly, a consistent homecare routine using cosmeceutical skincare products is vital for treating Acne. Using the correct products prescribed to you by your Dermal Clinician will strengthen and heal your skin which will improve your treatment results at Geelong Veins, Skin and Laser.

A great introduction into skincare for teens is the Synergie Teen-Intro Kit, containing a cleanser, serum and moisturiser specifically designed for teenage acne. If Acne has spread to the back and chest, Synergie’s Bacne Exfoliant helps to clear blockages and reduce inflammation.

It is common to want to camouflage acne with thick foundations but this can clog your pores and create more pimples. Another great tip is changing your make-up to a mineral product as these are non-comedogenic; meaning they won’t block your pores. Synergie again comes to the rescue with their popular Mineral Whip Foundation which has the added bonus of key ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, meaning this foundation is not only an SPF but it will also reduce inflammation in your skin.

What else can you do at home to help acne?

  • Change your pillow case every couple of nights to reduce the spread of bacteria
  • At night cleanse your face twice; once to remove makeup and debris, the second time will provide a proper deep cleanse to your skin and pores
  • Don’t touch your face, and especially don’t pick at your face.  This can spread bacteria and increase the risk of Acne scarring
  • Drink lots of water
  • Keep hair off your face
  • Clean your make-up brushes regularly
