Lip Lines Explained

Lip lines, aka lip wrinkles or smoker’s lines.  Even though there are several different names out there, the issue is the same.  Have you lost your lips? Does your lipstick bleed? Do you have fine vertical lines above your upper lip? Would you just like new lips?

What are line lines/smoker’s lines/lip wrinkles and what causes them?

“Smoker’s lines” is a term used to describe fine vertical lines running from the lips up or down into the non-coloured skin surrounding the mouth. As the term suggests they are common in smokers but can also occur in non-smokers. Sometimes there is a predisposing factor like whistling, drinking through a straw or pursing the lips frequently, and sometimes you just have age and genetics to blame.

How can lip lines be treated?

At Geelong Veins, Skin and Laser we can assess your individual needs and look at the lines around your lips, your lip shape & volume, and the health and shape of the skin surrounding this area. It is important to assess this area as a whole to plan the best treatment.

For mild lines, a treatment with the dermal therapist and starting the correct skincare regime may be prescribed.

For moderate to severe lines, we will discuss whether wrinkle treatments or a combination of volume treatments and wrinkle treatments to address signs of aging would give best results.

Ageing and genetics can be reversed and corrected with the use of the latest cosmetic injectable gels that mimic a substance that is naturally present in our body. Adding small doses of injection can relax the muscles slightly around the mouth, treating and preventing lines forming.

This walk-in-walk-out appointment can redefine lip borders, enhance contours, smooth away lines and add volume to achieve the lips you are meant to have.

Can lip lines be prevented?

Prevention includes not smoking or quitting if you are already a smoker. Good skin care for the perioral (skin around the lips) area and sun protection is important. Healthy diet and hydration will generally improve your skin to some extent. Treating the lines early will prevent them from progressing.

Who can I see at Geelong Veins, Skin and Laser to treat my lip lines?

The best place to start is with a complimentary consultation with our cosmetic nurse, Nurse Kenlyn. She can assess your individual needs and explain the different treatments and which would give the best results for you.
